Wow what a busy year it has been.

Term 4 is no different!

In literacy we are looking at narrative writing. We are discussing what makes a quality narrative by looking at fiction books to create our success criteria. Next week we will be looking at King Midas as an exemplar of quality story writing.

In Maths it's REVISION time. We are revisiting number to get ready for week 4's assessments.

For visual arts we will be doing Photography ( my personal favourite) and in PE we are doing Athletics in the lead up to Athletics Day in week 5.

Today we had our second session with Jo from Life Eduction. Our session were themed "It's Great To Be Me". Today we discussed personalities and we ended up in 4 groups. Lions, Turtles, Foxes and Bunnies.

Not to much surprise about half of Room 13 were bunnies! We talked about friendships and what strategies we can use in suitations of conflict.

Jo shared with us a poem by Barry Wade:

This afternoon Room 13 took a walk down to Rona Wharf. We practiced our sketching using different lines and shading.

We sketched the wharf and the details of the wharf like the lamp post, the wood used, the benches etc.

What a beautiful day it was!

In room 13 our Inquiry unit has been on Eastbourne and the History of Eastbourne. We visited some landmarks (The Rec, Rona Warf and Ballinger gardens) today and found out some facts, these are some of the facts Room13 found out:

· In 1921 the borough council commissioned a new 1,500 passenger ferry from Scotland. It cost about 45,000 pounds/$100,000.

· For residents and visitors, Rona-bay Warf has always been a great place for fishing, watching the sunset and even taking wedding photos!

· Ballinger gardens were built in 1978.

· The Rona bay Warf was a Treasure because it was used a lot.

Our big idea for the year is ‘A taste of town planning.’ To start the term we will be focusing on the past, learning about what Eastbourne used to look like 100 years ago. In particular, we will be looking at what type of community facilities were available for people to use. We will be investigating why the resources have changed or ceased to exist over time. This will lead into looking at the future and thinking about what kind of facilities we would like to see in Eastbourne for community use. The students will be surveying different members of the community to gauge their opinion and present a proposal for a new development.

We will also be focusing on the Key Competency ‘Relating to Others’ throughout this inquiry unit.

Character Writing

This term for writing we are focusing on writing quality character descriptions. We have been discussing what makes a great characterisation.

We discussed as a whole class what makes a good character in a book, movie or even comic strip.

Characters we came up with were Spiderman, Aslan, Homer Simpson, The Twits, Batman the list is endless.

We discussed good metaphors and similes and came up with some great ones! Here are some pictures of Room 13 doing literacy work

Matariki

What is Matariki?
Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year.

When is the Maori New Year?
The Maori new year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June. This next occurs on 5 June 2008.

What does Matariki mean?
Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

Why is Matariki important?
Traditionally, depending on the visibility of Matariki, the coming season's crop was thought to be determined. The brighter the stars indicated the warmer the season would be and thus a more productive crop. ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

WOW! What a fantastic event Zone Cross Country was yesterday. Mr Hull did such an amazing job at getting all the Year 4-6 children ready for it.

Well done to the 13 children in Room 13 that went to the event. A big congratulations to Matthew who came 1st in the cluster and he will be going through to Interzone!

Cross Country is a major event and I am quite in awe of you all!

Solar Power and Electricity unit

ROOM 13 have been very busy in inquiry learning about the power of the sun and electrical circuits.

The children have come to year 5 with a lot of knowledge on this topic with a couple of experts from last years Mr. Dobson's class - Wilson and Elliott!

Room 13 have been outside marking their shadows throughout the day to see what happens to them. We are going to be writing a piece of explanation writing about how this happens! Watch this space!

WELCOME BACK!

I hope all the Room 13 children have had a wonderful holiday and are feeling well rested. Term 1 is always a very busy term so the holiday was much needed. Fingers crossed for this good weather to continue for the last weekend!

Some reminders for Term 2:

Any pencil cases that were taken home must come back to school on day 1 please.
Term 2 is a slipper term, so if we could have as many slippers at school on day 1, that would be superb!
The seating has changed in the class and it looks great!
The school Cross Country will be held on Tuesday the 18th of May. This is in week 5.

Term 2 units:

Art - our art unit will be focusing on drawing and a range of different techniques
Mathematics - we will be focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
P.E - our P.E unit will be cross country training and then large ball skills
Inquiry - Our inquiry unit will be based on electricity! Our big idea is that 'Solar energy is the best way to generate electricity'. This statement will be looked into over the term and we will either agree with the statement, or disagree with it.

The Writing Process

Wow! Today has been a very very busy day!

Sue Steele and myself were in the classroom today supporting the children to finish their publishing. The children were/are publishing their camp recounts.

Writing a recount is a very big task and has been going on since week 7.

All the children started with a brainstorm of their activity that they were going to write about.

Most of the children started off their planning for their recount writing by completing a pictoral plan. This helped the children think about what they did on the camp activity and record it visually. This visual record helped the children remember what happened and help write up their written plan.

The written plan is in chronological order and is broken up into the orientation, the event and the conclusion.

Through draft writing the children explore their ideas and practice putting sentences together and paragraphs together to create the recount.

The teacher uses a pink highlighter pen to highlight what they were "tickled pink" by and a green highlighter to highlight what needed to "Grow" and be developed.

There were two children in particular that worked especially hard today on their publishing. Sam and William.

Room 13 have been celebrating World Maths. http://www.worldmathsday.com/2010/

During maths time we looked at weight using grams and kg. We used the Pods to look at http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk and went on to their great interactive weight links!

Later that morning Room 13 used to the Pods to play a range of maths games that make learning basic facts fun and enjoyable.

Some of the websites used were: mathletics, tutpup, funbrain, coolmaths4kids, ictgames etc!

Bridge Challenge week 4 & 5

Last week during Technology we were given a challenge to construct a bridge using only one piece of A4 paper...that's it! The bridge needed to support the heaviest weight possible. In groups we trialed several different designs.

New Task:
To design and build a bridge made of fettucine!

Your bridge needs to:
* Support a 500 gram weight (a block of butter)
* Span a 35 cm gap.

Resources:
* 500 gram packet of dried fettucine
* Hot glue guns
* Hot glue!

CRAZY FACES -BY ROOM 13 the photos

To start off the year and try to brighten up the room we have painted some distorted faces.
We started off by doing some quick sketches of our partners. It was funny because they were very quick. We also had to draw faces upside down, with our wrong hand and without looking.
We then looked at some art by Picasso and discussed the portrait of the 'Weeping Woman'
From there we sketched out a distorted face that we were happy with.
One of the main objectives of the lesson was to learn how to hold a paintbrush and apply paint.

Wow- Busy term coming up!

Yr 5/6 at Muritai School have got a very busy first term coming up.

First and foremost it is the term that we go to CAMP! Possibly the best four days of the school year. I absolutely loved camp in 2009 and I know that it is going to be even better this March.

Camp runs from 8th- 12th March. Our topic work will centre around camp and afterwards we will be doing an awesome technology unit! Go Mr D!

In literacy we will be focusing on personal recount writing and reading "Stig in the dump" by Clive King.

In maths will be looking at measurement and then place value in the second half of the term.

For Health and Physical Education we will be swimming until week 7 then starting small ball skills!

In art we will be focusing on drawing.

Wow that's a lot and there is more to come!

Kia Ora and Welcome to Room 13's blog.

At present this is not Room 13 talking but this is their to-be teacher Miss Holly Edwards!

I thought I would put up a wee post before we start the term to say how EXCITED I am to meet all 24 of them/you on Wednesday morning!

I had a great holiday spending time with family and friends in the UK over Christmas and New Year and experienced more snow in 4 weeks than in my whole life!

I'm looking forward to hearing all the summer news from the new Room 13.

Just a quick reminder for Wednesday.

Stationary (many of it is here already with the packs!)
